Tolliver likely saw the work of Montgomery artist Bill Traylor in the 1982 Corcoran show, "Black Folk Art in America" that both were included in. Tolliver never met Traylor, although he lived very near to Traylor's "sidewalk studio" in the 1930s and 1940s.
