Blocks and strips work-clothes quilt / Center medallion with cornerstones (two-sided quilt)

In the 1920s, Martha Jane created a near replica of another composition on one face of a two-sided quilt. The medallion design’s power derives from the oppositional interplay of image with ground, text with counter-text, and the juxtaposition of one design field against another. On the reverse side of the quilt is a composition of blocks and bars done in denim, corduroy, and other cotton fabrics. It was not uncommon for Gee’s Bend quiltmakers to make such double-sided patchworks, frequently creating a more informal design on the back.
